First-ever camping trip with the whole family! Just for a test trip after we bought our caravan, we took a weekend away, not too far from home. We knew nothing about camping, the caravan, or how it would go with the kids, but we wanted to give this a go.

I’d like to share our experiences, so let’s start at the beginning. This weekend, we knew nothing, from placing the caravan correctly to getting electricity, filling it up with water, and so on. We learned by doing, and the kids were also excited to learn and gladly helped with everything.
Encourage your kids to help, learn, and include them in what you do. They love to give a helping hand!

For our first trip, we went to Sykkylven and a campsite called “Sjøbakken Fjord Camping”. The season had not begun yet, so the camping site was quiet and almost empty, which we thought was nice for our first time. For the kids’ joy, there were animals right beside us: sheep, cows, and goats. You don’t need big amusement parks, swimming pools, and a kids’ club to please your kids. They are often as tired and exhausted as we parents, and a quiet, calm weekend is sometimes what they need.
Tip: They have a swimming pool not far away called the “Ikornnes Friluftsbad”, there are a few restaurants, and they had a festival when we were there called the “Brøvøllsfestivalen”.

On the way home, we visited a climbing park called “Hundeidvik klatrepark” (about 12 minutes by car from the camping site). It was so much fun! They also had electric cars to drive, animals, an excavator, and a big golfing court beside it.
After a day in the climbing park, we went home with a smile on our faces. The trip exceeded all expectations! It was a bit different living all four of us in a small caravan, but we enjoyed it so much, and the kids slept so well. I really recommend getting a caravan when the kids are little. It gives so many adventures and memories they will remember forever.
Our overall experience was positive. The campsite did not have high-standard facilities, but that was ok for a few days. The staff was super welcoming and friendly, also towards the kids.
Where did your first trip go? And was it a positive experience?
